NEPEC Mission/Vision

Mission: To provide a platform for nurse educators, practice and professional organizations, governmental agencies and others to pool expertise, make recommendations and disseminate best practices about emergency preparedness and disaster response education in the United States and worldwide.

Vision: Every nurse prepared to serve people and community in a disaster or emergency

STRATEGIC GOALS AND ACTION PLANS

1. Increase the informed awareness of all nurses regarding mass casualty incidents
    a) Establish a clearinghouse for informationand web-links about mass casualty
        incidents relevant for the professional development of nurses
    b) Identify effective continuing education opportunities for nurses related to
        mass casualty incidents

2. Increase the effectiveness of all nurses responding to mass casualty incidents
    a) Review and evaluate existing educational curricula for mass casualty incidents;
        Articulate with organizations and groups experienced in responding to mass
        casualty incidents
    b) Identify and define the roles and competencies for the delivery of safe and
        effective nursing care in a mass casualty incident with a specific focus on:
         —Improving morbidity and mortality rates in mass casualty incidents
         —Enabling the integration of nurses into the system of command in mass
            casualty incidents
         —Assuring the safety of nurses involved in responding to mass casualty incidents
     c) Develop recommendations for the educational preparation of all nurses related to
         mass casualty incidents e.g., recommend curriculum guidelines for nursing education
         at all levels of practice
     d) Develop recommendations for practice requirements/policies related to nurses
         responding to mass casualty incidents
     e) Identify rimary, secondary, and tertiary response frameworks for nurses involved
         in mass casualty incidents

3. Influence research efforts designed to improve nursing care and responses to
    mass casualty incidents
    a) Articulate a research program for INCMCE relative to nursing responses to mass
        casualty incidents
    b) Explore and respond to RFPs related to INCMCEs articulated research program
        for nursing responses to mass casualty incidents
