Ridner Receives Grant for Lymphedema Research (10/31/06)

Nashville, TN -- The American Cancer Society (ACS) has awarded Sheila Ridner, Ph.D., R.N., assistant professor of Nursing at the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing (VUSN), a Mentored Research Scholar Grant. The $438,000 grant will run from January 2007 through December 2009 and will fund a community-based intervention study that explores the influence of expressive writing on physical and psychological symptoms associated with breast cancer treatment-related lymphedema.

"We are delighted that the ACS decided to support this first such intervention study conducted in this patient population," said Peter Buerhaus, Ph.D., R.N., senior associate dean for research at VUSN. "Sheila's work will provide important insight into an area that few really understand."

Ridner's award will also fund advanced training in statistics and community-based research methodologies.

Ridner earned her Ph.D. at VUSN. She serves on both the Research and Medical Advisory Committees for the National Lymphedema Network and is a board member of The Lymphatic Research Foundation.
