Adult Nurse Practitioner (ANP)

Cardiovascular Disease Prevention
and Management

Are you interested in combating the leading cause of death in the United States? Choose Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Management as your ANP area of focus.

What Will You Do as an Adult Nurse Practitioner Specializing in Cardiovascular Disease?

In addition to delivering primary care to adolescents and young, middle and older age adults as an ANP, you will have specialized knowledge and skills regarding cardiovascular disease and its primary contributing factors. You will help patients ages 12 and up manage diabetes, hyperlipidemia (high cholesterol and high triglycerides), hypertension (high blood pressure), obesity and metabolic syndrome. Opportunities will exist for practice in a variety of clinical sites, and you will help fight the leading cause of death in the United States. The American Heart Association estimates that more than 70 million Americans have one or more forms of cardiovascular disease.

How will Vanderbilt Prepare You for Practice?

In addition to building knowledge through Vanderbilt School of Nursing core courses in the Master of Science in Nursing degree program and the adult primary care foundation courses, you will also learn the principles of cardiovascular health. Core courses in the prevention and management of the disease will include both classroom and clinical components to facilitate learning through the development of knowledge and applications skills.

You will learn nursing interventions to reduce risk for developing cardiovascular disease as well as the pathophysiology and clinical management of complex cardiovascular conditions. Case management and collaboration with the interdisciplinary health team are incorporated. The practicum in cardiovascular health will permit you to implement the role of the ANP under the guidance of other healthcare professionals while providing primary care to individuals with or at risk for developing cardiovascular disease, as well as co-morbid illnesses.

Modified Class Schedule

The ANP-Cardiovascular specialty program is one of several specialties at Vanderbilt School of Nursing offered in a modified learning (block) format that allows students to attend graduate school without having to relocate or give up employment. Distance and distributed course delivery methods, courses offered in blocks of time on campus (including weekends), online conferencing, and clinical practicum placement in your home area where possible let you earn your MSN degree without being away from home for extended periods.

Credentials and Certification

Graduation from the MSN program prepares you for licensure and “approval to practice” as a Registered Nurse (RN) in every state. You also will be eligible to sit for examination for the applicable certification, and eligible for prescriptive authority in all 50 states, with restrictions as specified by each state. Visit Credentialing and Certification for specific information.
