Frequently Asked Questions: Consumers

What is an APN?

An advanced practice nurse holds a master of science degree in nursing from an accredited school of nursing. S/he has advanced training in health assessment, physical diagnosis, pharmacology, and pathophysiology, as well as focused study in concentrated clinical areas such as care of neonates, families, the elderly, children and adolescents, mental health, women's health, midwifery, occupational health, inpatient acute and critical care, and correctional health. These highly skilled nurses are required to pass a national certification examination in their specialty area and obtain special licensing status from the State Board of Nursing. They practice in Tennessee under rules established in cooperation with the Tennessee State Board of Medical Examiners. They can prescribe medications in accordance with state and federal guidelines, diagnose and treat acute and chronic illness, perform physical examinations, and refer to specialists when needed. (Click on the specialty focus above for more information).
