Current Research Interests
My doctoral dissertation research, a three-phase study, addressed the empirical gap in knowledge about delirium in older cancer patients. The first phase, a secondary analysis of data from studies of acute confusion in hospitalized elders, examined delirium and its etiology in a sample of hospitalized older cancer patients. The second phase was a pilot study of a home-based protocol to evaluate delirium in three patients with advanced cancer. The third phase used a descriptive, longitudinal, multiple case study design to examine delirium and delirium vulnerability in seven older cancer patients near the end of life.
Expanding on my doctoral research, my postdoctoral research will focus more broadly on neurocognitive impairment in older cancer patients. Over the past decade, clinicians and investigators have begun to realize that a significant percentage of patients experience neurocognitive changes as a result of their cancer and cancer treatment, and that these changes have a profound negative effect on patient function and quality of life. Older adults may be at increased risk for developing acute and long-term neurocognitive impairment during and after cancer treatment. The societal implications of an enlarging population of older cancer patients with acquired or accelerated neurocognitive impairment are tremendous.
My postdoctoral research will allow me to better understand how frequently and under what circumstances neurocognitive impairment occurs in older adults with cancer during treatment, as well as begin to explore contributing factors and associated patient outcomes. In addition, it will provide a foundation for future studies to determine the epidemiology, risk factors, and ramifications of neurocognitive impairment in older cancer patients, and will lead to interventions that prevent and better manage neurocognitive impairment in this rapidly growing and vulnerable population.
